The signs of a foundation problem are diagonal cracks running from the corners of door and window openings, doors and windows that stick or stop latching, floors that slope or feel soft underfoot, and gaps opening where walls meet ceilings or baseboards. What those signs mean depends almost entirely on what your house sits on, and in Southern California that is usually a raised foundation over a crawl space or a slab on grade.
That last part gets left out of most advice on this subject, which is written for houses with basements and brick walls. Reading it against a stucco house on a crawl space sends you looking for things that are not there and past the things that are.
